LinkNYC is a first-of-its-kind communications network that replaces payphones across New York City’s five boroughs with new structures called Links. Each Link provides ultra-fast, free public Wi-Fi, phone calls, device charging, and a tablet offering access to city services, maps, and directions. LinkNYC represents the New York City branch of an international infrastructure initiative aimed at creating a free public Wi-Fi network across multiple cities. The office of Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the project on November 17, 2014, and installation of the first kiosks began in late 2015.

The Links replaced the city’s network of 9,000 to 13,000 payphones, under a contract that expired in October 2014. The LinkNYC kiosks were conceived following a series of competitions held by the City of New York to reimagine the public payphone system. Members of our team led the design efforts from the initial competition stage through multiple company acquisitions, ultimately building a multidisciplinary design department. This team worked across all user interfaces and services, including public-facing displays, tablets, mobile interfaces, support applications, field technician tools, and more.
